A good smoothie can really hit the spot. But let’s be real – it’s not rocket science and even a child can make a decent one. So, we decided to make this Boozy Berry Smoothie one a child can’t make or shouldn’t! Just a little Port Wine and you have a great summer drink or an option at brunch that isn’t going to knock you out but has an interesting and unique flavor.

What is in the Boozy Berry Smoothie?

For this boozy wine smoothie, there is no need for protein powder, kale, wheat grass or any crazy stuff, but you could certainly put them in to satisfy your conscience if that is an issue. We stick with the classics, for the most part and it delivers. We used a combination of berries, a banana, and a touch of almond milk. Obviously, there are a lot of replaceable items in our boozy smoothie, but if you like these base ingredients, give it a shot. They go well with a tawny port.

    Do I need fresh fruit?

Fresh fruit isn't necessary, but if you have it, you will need to freeze it first. So you will need to think a little ahead. You can use frozen fruit from the grocery store as well. For this version, strawberries and blueberries in roughly equal amounts work well. We also used a very ripe banana that was not frozen in our Boozy Berry Smoothies. The frozen fruit means no ice cubes are needed and more flavor comes through and the banana is a great body enhancer and sweetener without imparting too much banana flavor. Add sweetener as needed – depending on the fruit flavor and your personal taste. We opted for a little white sugar just to add a bit more sweetness, but feel free to leave it out or replace it with artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives. We used almond coconut milk blend, so this has an added perk of being dairy free if that’s important to you. But the almond coconut milk really makes the flavor work well. Just add a couple of shots of port at the end of blending and you’re golden!

What type of Port goes in the smoothie?

The port we used in this Boozy Smoothie was a tawny port. It’s not necessary to use anything expensive but just be you and use what you have. If you want a port floater – and now that I think about it why wouldn’t you – by all means, go for it! This just means you add a bit of port on top right before serving. Neither of us is a major smoothie drinker but we both absolutely loved this boozy version on a hot Saturday toward the end of summer. Enjoy!
