About the Flavors in this Shimmy Shimmy Coconut Cocktail
Gin, coconut, lime, and basil may seem interestingly odd at first glance, but they work perfectly! You taste everything in subtle ways and if using Empress 1908 cucumber lemon gin, you get an additional very subtle hint of cucumber in the finished cocktail.
Ingredients
Here is what you need to make this recipe:
- Gin: We used the Empress 1908 Cucumber Lemon gin, which is refreshing and light. We love the added flavors in this cocktail, but any dry gin will work great here.
- Coco López: The addition of coconut cream adds a nice coconut flavor and some sweetness from this amazing Cream of Coconut mixer.
- Basil: Fresh basil brightens this coconut gin drink and provides a very gentle flavor hint to this cocktail
- Lime: A small amount of fresh squeezed lime juice complements everything with a little acidity.
See recipe card below for quantities.
Substitutions
Here are a couple of common substitutions for the ingredients in this recipe:
- Gin: Although we love the Empress 1908 Cucumber Lemon gin in this, you can really use a variety of different gins to make this cocktail. You could even use vodka or white rum if you wanted.
- Lime: Any citrus could be used…we tried many including lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit juice but lime seemed to work the best for our preference.

Variations
Here are a couple of ways to change up this recipe:

Can you batch make this cocktail in advance?
If making this cocktail in advance for a party, you can make it in a large batch by combining all ingredients in a pitcher without ice. When serving simply pour into the shaker and then into the glass.
How to store premade cocktails:
- They can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.
How to serve premade cocktails:
- Serve in your favorite tall cocktail glass over ice
Top Tip
If you don’t want small bits of basil in your cocktail, simply strain with a fine mesh strainer when pouring from the shaker into the cocktail glass.
Troubleshooting
This is very straightforward so you shouldn’t have any issues. If you only have dried basil, we’d recommend not using it at all.
What appetizers to serve with this coconut basil lime gin cocktail?
Just about any savory dish can be enjoyed with this cocktail. Especially fried foods, such as shrimp or arancini are perfect appetizers. On the sweet side, any type of berries or chocolate go well with this cocktail.
FAQ
It is a cream of coconut derivative cocktail mixer that also has xanthan gum (for thickening), sugar, and citric acid for preserving and making it a shelf-stable product. Coco López originates from Puerto Rico. This is the mixer for the original Piña Colada.
No. Coco López is a sweetened mixer and the base of it is cream of coconut. If substituting regular Cream of Coconut for Coco López, you may need to add simple syrup to the cocktail to sweeten it.
Obviously it does as this drink is fantastic! However, they are not commonly found together and it really depends on the gin as well as the additional ingredients used in a cocktail.
