    Why You'll Love this Recipe

    • Very few ingredients
    • So easy to put these together
    • Delicious appetizer!
    • Great to make for a crowd
    • Beautiful presentation!

    Why These Flavors Work Together

With only 5 main ingredients, the flavors have to work together well and these absolutely do! The sweetness of the fig, honeydew, and honey are all balanced by the savory and salty prosciutto for the perfect appetizer. It works so well, you can't just eat one!

    Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites

    Ingredients

Here is what you need to make this recipe:

    • Fresh Figs: Any fresh, in-season sweet figs, such as black mission figs, work great here.
    • Prosciutto: Prosciutto is Italian ham that is dry-cured and thinly sliced. Prosciutto di Parma or Prosciutto di San Danielle are the most common or well-known types, but any thinly sliced strip of prosciutto will be delicious in this fig appetizer.
    • Honeydew Melon: This sweet vibrant green melon perfectly pairs with the sweetness of the figs and savory salty prosciutto for a delicious flavor combo.
    • Fresh Mint: Leaves of fresh mint on the skewers provide a nice fresh flavor to this sweet and savory combo.
    • Honey: A drizzle of honey over the simple appetizer skewers adds a nice final touch and perfect balance to the fig bites.

See recipe card below for quantities.

    Substitutions

Here are a couple of common substitutions for the ingredients in this recipe:

    • Figs: Dried figs could work here, although fresh figs are recommended.
    • Honeydew: We think this has the perfect amount of sweetness and a great flavor, but other melons work as well. Cantaloupe is an especially good substitute here and is commonly served with prosciutto.
    • Prosciutto: Serrano ham, Iberico ham or any of the various cured hams made around the world will be a good substitute for prosciutto.

How to Make Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites

This is as simple as preparing the ingredients, skewering them, hit with a drizzle of honey and serve! Easy as can be!

    Equipment

Here is what you need to make this dish

    • Melon baller
    • Wooden skewers

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Prepare the Melon

    • Halve your honeydew melon. Use a melon baller to make balls of honeydew and set aside.

Prepare the Other Ingredients and Skewer

    • Slice the figs in half and cut each piece of prosciutto in half or thirds depending on how large your slices are. Assemble the skewers by skewering the prosciutto, followed by the fresh mint leaf, then the fig half, and finally the melon ball on each skewer.

    Finish and Serve

    • Lay the skewers on your serving plate. Drizzle with a small amount of honey and they are ready to serve with an extra side of honey.

    Variations

Here are a couple ways to change up this recipe:

    • Incorporate some sweet basil in the skewers instead of mint for a completely different adventure
    • Replace the honey with a high quality balsamic vinegar or a balsamic glaze for an alternative sweet component
    • Omit the prosciutto for a meatless option.

    Storage

How to store leftover Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites:

    • These will keep for a couple of days in a covered airtight container in the refrigerator.

How to serve leftover Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites:

    • These are better closer to room temperature than when cold and right from the refrigerator, so remove from the refrigerator 15-20 minutes before serving.

Can you freeze leftover Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites?

We don't recommend doing this as the textures will all be compromised and the flavors will be as well.

    Top Tip

This works the best when using nice, ripe fruit. Make sure you buy ripe figs and melons from your local grocery store or farmers' market for best results.

    Troubleshooting

If you have honey that has crystalized, just put the whole container in a pot of hot water until all crystallization has dissolved. Your honey should be ready to use at this point for easy drizzling.

What to serve with Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites

These tasty fig bites work great as an addition to a charcuterie board, especially with a creamy cheese, fresh goat cheese or blue cheese.

We think they are especially good with grilled foods if you are serving these as a multi-course meal. These are great appetizers for just about any main course so serve them with anything!

What Wines To Drink with Fig Prosciutto and Honeydew Bites

There are several great options for wine pairing here. Bubbles are perfect and an extra dry or dry option of a sparkling wine or champagne is a good choice. Also, cava or prosecco are great with these bites.

You can also go the dessert wine route and serve madeira, a sweet port wine, sherry or vin santo.

Finally, a simple, crisp white wine such as a pinot gris from France, or a California version are great white wine picks to pair with these.

    FAQ

Why are prosciutto and melon so good together?

Prosciutto and melon are just a classic combination of salty and sweet that always works. Adding figs and honey are natural complements!

Why is prosciutto ok to eat raw?

Prosciutto is cured meat from the hind leg part of the pig and is of Italian origin. Because it has been dry-cured by air drying and salting the meat for several months or up to a few years, it has undergone a transformation that makes it safe to eat raw.

What part of the pig is prosciutto?

Prosciutto is from the hind leg of a pig.
